Rev. Dr. Edward Burke was an Irish Roman Catholic priest and educator. Edward William Burke was born in Hodgestown, Clane, Co. Kildare, on July 3, 1847, he was educated in Carlow College and Maynooth and was ordained for the priesthood in Maynooth College in 1869. Following one year in the Dunboyne Institute in Maynooth, he became a professor in Carlow College, served as vice-president of the college from 1874 and served as College president from 1880 until 1892, and in 1890 he was appointed parish priest of Bagenalstown, Co. Edward Burke ) Bagenalstown Parish History.〕 also the transfer of the Lay College to Knockbeg occurred during his tenure in Carlow College.
